A golf course dating from 1928 could be saved by its community of West Dunbarnishire, because some of the biggest names in sport give their support.

The Dalmuir golf course faces the closure this year while the West Dunbarishire Council voted to chop the course financing as part of a cost reduction measure to fill a budgetary difference of 7.7 million pounds sterling.

However, Clydebank and Overtoun Golf Club, who operate on the site, plan to take control of the 18 -hole municipal route.

The club’s rescue offer involved a petition against the financing decision of the Council which brought together more than 4000 signatures.

Some of the best players in the world have also signed the petition, notably the number one player in Scotland, Robert Macintyre (below), Justin Rose and the Honorary Club member and Caddy of the Ryder Cup Craig Connolly.

“We take control of the course and its facilities,” said Gerry Smith, club secretary, at Stv News.

“It would be up to us to run and have the standard that is required.”

The US Open US Open champion Bryson Dechambeau (below) also sent a video message to support the club’s campaign when he praised the Dalmuir community.

He said: “Sometimes people do not make the impact of what golf can be and what it is for a community – whether it is the development of the character, personal growth, learn more about yourself or about family development.

“And I think it is important for people to understand that if you do not have golf courses like Dalmuir and a community like Dalmuir, then it is difficult to continue to grow.”

Despite the financing of the local authority which was exhausted in early April, the club hopes that a transfer of assets could be operational by the summer.

Gerry said: “My ideal scenario is that confidence is in place, the golf course flowers, people use it every day of the week and we get visitors from all over Scotland.

“There is somewhere for them to eat, somewhere to have a drink. And we might even go back down a professional in the golf course. ”
