Head coach Andy Farrell unveiled coaches of British and Irish Lions coaches to visit Australia, the coach of the Scottish attackers John Dalziel is a surprise inclusion.
Senior Deputy Coach of England, Richard Wigglesworth, is also one of the staff, with Simon Easterby, who depressed Farrell with Ireland during the Six Nations.
Scrum coach John Fogarty and attack coach Andrew Goodman also joins Irish staff, with the chief of the Aled Walters packaging confirmed previously.
Farrell is the only staff member with previous training experience during a lions tour, although Easterby has shot as a player.
Although Walters is Welsh, there is no representative of the staff of Welsh coaches after consecutive wooden spoons.
Alongside Walters, David Nucifora – formerly Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFI) and now Director of Performance at the Scottish Rugby Union – was confirmed as performance director for the tour in January.
“It is a special day for the British and Irish lions and our five new assistant coaches who met yesterday for the very first time,” said Farrell.
“The establishment of a coaching team Lions is an honor and a privilege – and the five telephone calls made to this group of coaches remind you of how special and unique it is. This coaching group has versatility and is interchangeable in their skills, which is a vital asset to have during a lions tour.
“I think we have a fantastic mixture and each of these guys will bring their own character and personality to the team. A lions tour consists in understanding the requirements we will be confronted on and off the field and a new perspective among this group of coaches is something that really excites you.
“We are now a month and a half to bring together and select the players before an announcement of the historic team at the O2 in front of our fans of Lions.”
The staff certainly have an Irish feeling, with Easterby, a lieutenant key to Farrell, English led Ireland to consecutive titles from the Six Nations, and Fogarty a popular member of the wider team of coaches.
Goodman is a more recent addition, but the New Zealander has worked before with Leinster and is considered an intelligent attack thinker. He was brought to Dublin by Joe Schmidt, now a head coach of Australia.
Wigglesworth, on the other hand, is the beneficiary of a strong end to the Six Nations for England after supervising the team’s attack since his retirement in the summer of 2023.
“I am absolutely delighted to be part of the lions. Proud is probably an understatement to what I feel right now,” said the old half of melee. “I could never play with Andy, but he was my trainer at Saracens and England, so I know his caliber and I can’t wait to work with him.
“When I received the call, I was in the rear garden with my five -year -old daughter at dad’s tasks and I had to calm her while I was taking her.”
The Lions start their tour with a match against Argentina in Dublin on Friday June 20, before taking the Wallabies in a series of three tests from Saturday 19 July.
